Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) in the US has placed an order for 15 additional Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers.

The order was recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, with deliveries already in progress. The final units are expected to be handed over by April 2026.

Located at New Jersey’s Port of Newark, a significant hub on the US East Coast, PNCT operates in a challenging climate with severe winters and humid summers.

The terminal has relied on the performance and dependability of Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers for many years, marking the commissioning of its 200th unit in mid-2023.

The longstanding partnership and Konecranes’ robust local service support have influenced PNCT’s decision to further invest in its straddle carrier fleet, which now includes 124 units in daily use.

The introduction of the new Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers aims to enhance operational efficiency while lowering both operating costs and CO2 emissions.

PNCT engineering and equipment services director Charlie Ferlisi said: “Konecranes sets the industry standard in container handling performance, reliability and eco-efficiency.

“We also highly value the company maintaining a comprehensive spare parts depot close to the terminal, so any operational downtime can be reduced significantly. This combination of innovation and top-notch service is what makes Konecranes such a great port partner.”

The assembly and commissioning of the new straddle carriers are scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

Konecranes straddle carrier business unit sales director Peter Kania said: “This agreement is another significant milestone in our partnership with PNCT. Together we’re focused on eco-efficient, high-performance container handling in the modern era.”

The latest order aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which seeks to enhance the positive environmental impact of its products and services while minimising the carbon footprints of its customers.

The initiative includes advancements from eco-optimised diesel drives to hybrid and fully electric fleets.

Last year, Konecranes delivered eight hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers to Copenhagen Malmö Port for a new container terminal in Copenhagen.
