APM Terminals Barcelona has expanded its operational capabilities with the arrival of three Triple-E Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes.
The cranes, acquired from ZPMC, are a key component of the terminal’s modernisation initiative aimed at enhancing its strategic presence in the Mediterranean region and improving service efficiency for next-generation container vessels.
The cranes were delivered aboard the vessel Zhen Hua 35, which also transported a rail-mounted gantry crane (RMG) and an electric straddle carrier.
The RMG is set to bolster intermodal operations involving the railway, while the electric straddle carrier is part of APM Terminals Barcelona’s pilot project focused on electrification.
In preparation for the cranes’ arrival, APM Terminals Barcelona advanced some of its scheduled upgrades to the quay, including enhancements to bollards, channelling, and bumpers. These upgrades will continue after the cranes are unloaded.
The process of unloading and positioning the cranes, which arrived fully assembled from China, is expected to be completed by 13 April.
The newly acquired equipment is anticipated to be fully operational by the end of the second quarter of 2025.
