The Steelmaster systems will be used to transport steel beams to the appropriate stockyard storage area, where they are then loaded onto a conveyor system for further processing in the factory and onward delivery.
The cranes have a 36m span, long travel speeds between 4-125m/min, cross travel speeds of 5-32m/min and hoisting speeds of 2-12.5m/min under load.
ParkerSteel, a leading supplier of structural beams and columns to the UK construction industry, is setting up the new dockside facility in order to eliminate the cost of transporting beams from port to factory. When fully operational, the facility will have the capacity to handle 1,000t of steel each day.
Demag took the dockside position of the cranes into consideration when designing them, including the corrosive environment and potential for high winds. It has used anti-pendulation reeving systems to eliminate load sway in severe winds.
“With such a large volume of throughput, any downtime as a result of crane failure would compromise our operation,” said ParkerSteel’s commercial manager John Goring.
