Local newspaper Thanh Nien reports that the eight men were commissioning the new crane when it collapsed, crushing them beneath. The seven killed were named as Pham Dinh Tuyen, Pham Dinh Thuy, Do Van Luan, Dinh Xuan Huong, Le Van Tien, Phan Van Ngan and Hoang Van Tuan. The injured worker, Mai Ngoc Thanh, was taken to Bai Chay General Hospital in Ha Long Town.
The men were using two 130t capacity crawler cranes to help erect the gantry crane. One of the crawlers was damaged in the accident: pictures published by Thanh Nien show the gantry lying on the ground, with the twisted lattice work of the crawler on top.
The new gantry had been bought from a Chinese manufacturer to replace two destroyed in hurricanes last year.
