It is not the first time SCX and Houlder have worked together.

SCX will design, manufacture and install two 4.5t SWL cranes, one for each of HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark. The cranes will be required to operate in ocean conditions. Special features include rack and pinion systems to prevent any unwanted movement when the motion of the sea alters the orientation of the ship.

The cranes are to be located in the stern of the ships above the “well dock” – this is the area that is flooded during operations to allow the landing craft to be deployed. The ship is lowered to allow water into the well dock area enabling the landing craft, loaded with large vehicles and other essential equipment, to drive out of the stern of the ship. It is for the loading of this equipment that SCX’s cranes are required.

As the stern of the ship lowers, the crane will tilt with it, and so the gantries will be built at an angle of one degree to the horizontal along the end section to accommodate this movement. As the ship tilts, the crane gantry will become horizontal, so allowing for safe operation. The rack and pinion design will also help to ensure safety.

Due to the location and environment of the cranes, access for maintenance is restricted, and so SCX plans to install maintenance platforms and access walkways, as per client requirements.
