Singapore’s CPG Consultants has won its first assignment in Europe after being appointed by the Japanese-Turkish consortium, Taisei-Kumagai-Gama-Nurol joint venture, to help design twin rail tunnels under the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey.
The 1.4km Marmaray Railway Bosphorus tube crossing is part of a US$1bn, 13.6km railway that will improve both rail communications in Istanbul as well as between Europe and Asia as it links the European and Asian sides of the city.
CPG Consultants was formed in 1999 following the corporatisation of Singapore’s public works department. The parent company, CPG Corporation was bought by Australian contractor Downer-EDI in 2003.
Khor Poh Hwa, president and chief executive of CPG Corporation, said: “CPG’s transportation engineering and project management expertise will be our key contribution to the implementation of this mega project in Turkey.” The tunnel is due to be completed in 2009.
