SKF has developed a new low-cost temperature monitoring device for bearing users which changes colour when it gets too hot.
The TempGuard TMTM is designed to help prevent unscheduled maintenance by giving an instant visual warning of any increase in the operating temperature of rolling bearings.
When bearings get too hot the lubricant begins to break down and the metallurgical structure of the bearing material changes. This can lead to the rolling elements becoming damaged beyond repair.
This new monitor uses a ‘memory’ metallic spring system which is housed in a compact canister with a patch that changes colour when the temperature rises above set limits, and then changes back again when the temperature of the bearing falls.
