British Steel has taken delivery of two of the UK’s largest sets of dogging tongs.

The tongs, each with a lifting capacity of 40t, weighing 9t and standing 4m high, were designed and built by Professional Lifting Services (PLS). They are to be used for lifting steel slabs at the Scunthorpe steel works.

The slabs, which are heated and rolled into steel plate, are up to 1500mm wide, 300mm deep and weigh as much as 10t. PLS first started working with British Steel on modification and improvement work and then went on to supply new equipment.

PLS has also received an order from steel working company Jack Tighe, also based in Scunthorpe, for a 40t goliath crane in a contract worth £80,000 ($128,000). The crane will stand more than 11m high, have a 17m span and be used to lift fabricated steel work.

Another UK contract for PLS, worth £160,000 ($256,000), is for a 60t capacity tandem crane system with 27.5m span. Bombardier Transportation in Yorkshire will use the crane system for building railway carriages.

Widening its product range, PLS has been appointed UK distributor for Indiload electronic load limiters and crane management systems manufactured by EIA of Belgium. The Mark 1 gives overload protection and problem identification. Expansion cards can be added to build a complete crane management system.
