Construction has begun on a new automated warehouse in Sandwich, Kent in the UK for the pharmaceuticals company Pfizer, riding high on the success of its impotency drug Viagra.

The facility will handle the supply of materials and components to the production plants as well as the picking and collation of a range of finished products for delivery to health service and veterinary customers around the world.

The materials handling installation contract was won by Morris, which is installing five auto-stacker cranes, a pallet conveyor and a carton picking system. The warehouse management system will control movement of all materials within the 28m-high automated warehouse and low bay area, and equipment will be monitored by a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

The installation is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
