Committee nominees have to have a strong interest in the safety and health of workers in the shipyard, longshoring and commercial fishing industries. At the time of going to press, the Secretary of Labor, currently Martin J. Walsh, was due to select 15 members to create “a broad-based, balanced and diverse committee representing the interests of employers, employees, safety and health professional organisations, government organisations with interests or activities related to the maritime industry, academia and the public”, which is why the decision as to who makes up the committee is such a critical one for the US.

Members serve a two-year term and the current MACOSH membership expires on April 12, 2023. The advisory committee meets approximately twice per year. Nominations and supporting materials had to be submitting electronically to the Federal eRulemaking Portal by January 13.
