Bulgarian port operator BMF Port Burgas AD has placed an order for two Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald ESP.9 mobile harbour cranes.

The agreement was finalised in the first quarter of 2025, with delivery anticipated by the fourth quarter of the same year.

BMF’s collaboration with Konecranes began 12 years ago when the Bulgarian company purchased four pre-owned Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour cranes.

In 2016, two of these cranes underwent retrofitting with external power supplies, aimed at lowering onsite emissions and reducing operational costs. This retrofit was extended to the remaining two cranes in 2021.

The recent acquisition marks BMF’s first investment in new Konecranes Gottwald ESP.9 cranes, each capable of lifting 150 tonnes. This move is part of BMF’s strategy to enhance terminal handling performance and further its commitment to reducing emissions by equipping the cranes with external power supplies from the start.

BMF project manager Nikola Kosev said: “Our existing Konecranes equipment has proven its reliability and efficiency for more than a decade – meeting our expectations every step of the way.

“We’re excited to now reach the milestone of investing in two brand new cranes, significantly boosting our performance in handling both project cargo and containers.”

BMF Port Burgas is expanding its equipment to accommodate rising freight volumes. The operator has developed a new deep-water berth at the Burgas West Terminal, enhancing its capacity to handle larger vessels and heavier cargo. This development strengthens BMF’s role as a significant logistics provider in the Black Sea region.

Konecranes Port Solutions regional sales manager Andreas Czwalinna said: “BMF’s journey from operating pre-owned cranes to investing in the latest Generation 6 models is a great example of successful growth with Konecranes.

“We are proud to have supported them for more than a decade, always finding the right handling and drive solutions for their needs.”

The contract aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which aims to increase the positive environmental impact of its products and services while helping customers decrease their carbon footprints.

Last month, the Saguenay Port Authority in Quebec ordered a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.6B mobile harbour crane for a cargo handling system that is presently being developed.
