KCI Konecranes of Finland has received a Euro 4m order to deliver seven cranes to Celsa UK, which the company claims is the only rebar producer in the UK.

The order is for two 30t capacity scrapyard cranes, two 33t capacity billet cranes, and three maintenance cranes with capacities ranging from 10t-15t capacity.

The plant is renewing some old cranes in the facility, according to KCI Konecranes.

The Cardiff, Wales production facility consists of a melt shop powered by an electric arc furnace and two production facilities: one for reinforcing bar and wire rod and one for merchant bar, light sections and mild steel coil. Most of these products are sold into the UK construction market. Total production is about 1.2m t per year.

The order came directly to KCI Konecranes, instead of passing through Scotland-based UK special cranes agent Konecranes UK.

The steel plant was closed by its owners Allied Steel and Wire in 2002. But it was reopened in 2003 when ASW was acquired by Spanish steel company Celsa.
