US hoist maker Coffing has launched a larger, 3HP version of its EC-1 large frame chain hoist with variable-frequency drive.

The EC-1 has a load capacity range from 1/8 US ton to 3 US ton (113kg to 3.3t). The EC-3 can lift 2 US ton to 5 US ton (4.5t).

Both hoists feature a load brake and variable-frequency drive from Power Electronics International. Both hoists accept single and three-phase AC electricity in 50 or 60 Hz with a variety of voltages.

The larger unit will share the EC-1’s two-step push buttons for up and down motions. The second step instructs the hoist to accelerate; the first step instructs the hoist to continue the motion steadily without acceleration. A potentiometer-based button control that offers many more gradations of speed depending on the strength of the button press is in development, according to communications manager Curtis Sanborn.
