Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) is set to enhance its new container terminal in Ydre Nordhavn with the arrival of two new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes from Finnish manufacturer Konecranes.

The cranes, each weighing approximately 1,150 tonnes and standing over 77m tall, will be transported individually and are anticipated to arrive a few weeks apart, with the first expected by the end of the week, subject to weather conditions.

Copenhagen Malmö Port COO Povl Dolleris Røjkjær Ungar said: “The cranes’ journey to Denmark takes about four days, followed by a few days at the quay for securing and preparing for installation on the designated crane tracks at the container terminal.

“The journey from one of the world’s leading crane suppliers is the culmination of long-term planning and execution in close collaboration between us and Konecranes.”

These cranes, equipped with advanced features like remote control and semi-automatic operation, are designed to future-proof the terminal’s operations.

Once the cranes arrive, they will undergo rigorous testing before becoming operational. The terminal’s activities are slated to relocate from Levantkaj in the latter half of 2025.

Konecranes STS cranes director Simo Mustalammi said: “It has been a pleasure to work with CMP throughout this project and now we’re at the delivery stage. We’ll continue to work closely with CMP through the unloading, testing and commissioning of this first crane and the second that’s coming.”

Previously, Konecranes supplied CMP with eight hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers for the Copenhagen terminal.

Delivered in the fourth quarter of last year, these carriers have since been assembled and thoroughly tested at the current terminal site.
