It added: “The breakage was found on the coupling of the drive axis of the unit 6 reactor building ceiling crane.” The crane is used to lift the head of the reactor pressure vessel, casks of spent fuel and containers of fuel at the reactor building refueling floor.

Reports in the Mainichi Daily News claimed that an official of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the crane “didn’t fall, and that safety at the nuclear plant has been maintained.”

The report concluded: “The No 6 reactor was not in operation when the earthquake hit Niigata Prefecture and nearby areas on July 16.”
