MacGregor is Finnish-owned Cargotec’s brand dealing in load handling equipment for marine and offshore.
The cranes are variable frequency drive electric cranes and each of the ships, which will be used to carry cargo once they are built, will have a deadweight tonnage of 28,000. Three cranes will be installed on each ship.
Cargotec will outfit five of the ships with one crane with 80t capacity and one with 60t capacity. It will supply two additional ships with one 60t crane and two 100t cranes each.
Svante Lundberg, sales manager for cargo cranes at Cargotec, said, “We are seeing increasing interest in our electric cranes and deck machinery as more companies become aware of the economic, operational and environmental advantages they offer.”
Cargotec’s other brands, Hiab and Kalamar, are also geared towards cargo handling. Hiab deals in loader, recycling and forestry cranes and Kalamar offers reach stackers and straddle carriers, which may also be used for ports.
After the ships are built by Huanghai Shipbuilding in China, Macgregor will deliver the cranes on a schedule between August 2012 and September the following year.
