Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg has placed an order for 15 Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers, marking a significant investment in sustainable logistics solutions.

The order, finalised in late 2024, is set to introduce a new modular design for straddle carriers, facilitating easier retrofitting of drives to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. The delivery of these carriers is scheduled for July 2026.

The Eurogate Group, which manages over 12 million TEUs annually across nine sites in Europe and Africa, has a longstanding relationship with Konecranes, having integrated several hundred of their straddle carriers into its German operations over the past quarter-century.

The latest acquisition underscores Eurogate’s trust in Konecranes’ capacity to deliver reliable and latest solutions that support the reduction of fossil fuel usage.

The newly ordered straddle carriers feature a modular design that simplifies the process of upgrading power systems, allowing for transitions to battery-electric or hydrogen power with minimal effort. This design change addresses the previously complex task of drive upgrades, making it more straightforward to achieve zero fossil fuel dependency.

Additionally, the carriers will be compatible with TIC 4.0, an industry-standard framework that enhances data transmission capabilities for improved operational insight and performance monitoring.

The contract aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which aims to enhance the positive environmental impact of their products and services while assisting customers in reducing their carbon emissions.

Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg managing director Johannes Stelten said: “The flexibility to make powertrain upgrades makes this a future-proof investment. Konecranes is helping us to move towards CO2-neutral operations while continuing to deliver the high operational efficiency we are known for.”

Konecranes straddle carrier business unit sales director Peter Kania said: The new, modular design of Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers opens a new era in container handling by combining modular flexibility with sustainable performance. It’s appropriate that Eurogate – one of our most loyal customers – has taken this step towards the future of eco-efficient container handling.”
