Konecranes has been awarded a contract to supply 16 hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes for the Bayport Container Terminal at the Port of Houston, in Houston, Texas.

The contract has been awarded by the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority.

The RTG cranes will serve as inaugural ‘one-over-six’ container stacking units at Port Houston, expanding the port’s hybrid fleet to 46 units, in line with its sustainability goals.

CEO Charlie Jenkins noted Port Houston’s participation in Ports Day in Austin, where it joined 22 other Texas seaports to advocate for infrastructure funding.

Port of Houston Authority chairman Ric Campo said: “Congressman Turner was a champion of our city and of our port and leaves a tremendous legacy. We know his contributions and dedication to public service will have lasting benefits for Houston and our communities.

“Congressman Babin continues to be a steadfast advocate for the port and the maritime industry across the nation.

“He spearheaded the WRDA 24 bill effort to bring federal cost sharing of maintenance and construction to 55-foot channels, a huge win for ports across the U.S. Congratulations to Congressman Babin on this well-deserved achievement.”

In addition to the Konecranes contract, the Port Commission also awarded Breaux Brothers a contract for a new electric/diesel hybrid vessel to replace the M/V Sam Houston.

The construction of the vessel, which will enhance public tours of the Houston Ship Channel, is expected to take 12 to 14 months.
