The factory will be closed by 31 March 2010, and 85 employees in crane production and assembly, component production and plant administration will be affected.
The annual production of cranes at Ettlingen represented approximately 15% of Konecranes industrial crane production in 2008.
Konecranes said the need to reduce costs and restructure is due to the “sharp drop in demand and a low industrial capacity utilisation rate”. Konecranes has announced an annual cost saving target of EUR100m in 2010 compared to 2008. It added manufacturing will continue at its facilities in Künzelsau and Liebengrün.
