Künz has secured a major contract with ÖBB for the delivery of five automatic gantry cranes to TSA INFRA terminals in Vienna South, Wels, and Wolfurt.
The cranes, which will be delivered by the end of 2027, will feature remote control stations. This order marks one of the largest in Europe’s intermodal business in recent years and underscores the growing trend toward shifting freight transport from road to rail.
The investment is part of ÖBB’s commitment to increasing capacity, service, and growth at the terminals. Sabine Ujhelyi, head, of Development Freight Centres, ÖBB, said the expansion not only boosts equipment capacity but strengthens the Austrian economy.
As part of the deal, existing cranes in Wolfurt and Vienna South will be retrofitted for automatic operation. These new cranes will be equipped with advanced sensors to precisely place containers on trucks or trains, improving operational accuracy. Additionally, modern office spaces will be established for crane operators, enabling them to operate the machines manually or semi-automatically via remote control stations. These stations are designed to create job opportunities for people with disabilities, contributing to an inclusive workforce.
In its selection process, TSA INFRA focused on a total cost of ownership analysis, weighing both investment costs and long-term operational expenses. Künz was chosen over international competitors not only for its crane design but also for its ongoing maintenance services, which will be provided for the next several years.
David Moosbrugger, CEO, Künz, said the contract reflects the long-standing and successful partnership between ÖBB and Künz. He also highlighted that the cranes will meet the highest technological standards.
