Overhead travelling crane builder Konecranes UK, based in Scotland,is working on two major orders from international contractors for projects in the Middle East.

Siemens of Germany has ordered a further six cranes for its power station project in Az Zour, Kuwait. This will bring the total Konecranes operating on this site to 27.

One is specified as an explosion proof CXTDEex crane and the others are normal CXTD models. Their capacities range from 3t to 5t and spans range from 6m to 17m. All will be pendant controlled and are to have platforms on the girders and trolleys. They will operate with Konecranes DynADrive invertor speed controls plus true vertical lift and long and cross travel limit switches. Konecranes’ ControlPro condition monitoring systems are also included.

The order worth £180,000 ($340,000) will be delivered in March 2004.

The second project is for Bechtel, which has ordered nine cranes on behalf of Alba Aluminium in Bahrain for its Potline 5 expansion project. These cranes are from 2t to 33t capacity and with spans up to 32.5m.

Six of the Alba cranes are SMD models and the other three are CXT single and double girder models. Five of the SMD cranes have 5t auxiliary hoists and four of the SMD cranes will have motorised rotation on the main hooks. Again, each crane/hoist will be fitted with ControlPro condition monitoring system. Delivery of the Bechtel order starts in June and ends in July 2004.

Konecranes UK has also won a contract to supply three cranes to main contractor Costain for the Synchrotron Building which is part of the diamond Building project at Didcot in Oxfordshire, UK. The three cranes are each 20t capacity with 30m spans. They will be installed on a single circular track and will have specially designed travel wheels set at a tangent to the track diameters where the inner wheels will revolve at different rate from the outer wheels, allowing the crane to naturally follow the circular track. These cranes will be installed and commissioned in July this year.
