The Crane Safety Monitor reads loading data provided by force transducers installed at relevant points on the crane. A processor in the control box evaluates them. When pre-set loading levels are exceeded, the unit will activate an alarm or prevent the crane from lifting.

Because it is monitoring the crane’s operational conditions, the CSM can also calculate the safe working period before the next service is required, according to the company. The system also checks itself, and any functional faults result in an overload indication.

The CSM processor is capable of setting up and calculating mathematical relationships between inputs – it can be programmed to take into account the sum of loads on different hoists when they are being used simultaneously, or the difference between loads in two hoists.

The monitors are currently installed on several heavy-duty overhead travelling cranes at the HKM, Thuessen, TST Schienen and Voestalpine steelworks.
