Sumner Manufacturing was established in 1964 by Joe Sumner, a Texas oilfield engineer. He identified a need for a lifting tool to position pipework for welding and designed and built what has become the Roust-A-Bout material lift, Sumner’s signature product.

The Roust-A-Bout material lift is available in the UK in two configurations, the R-100 (15ft) and R-250 (25ft). Both of these robust lifts are capable of lifting up to 680kgs and are ideally suited for rugged applications, where there is a need to lift and position lengths of pipework, or steel beams.

Such is the design integrity and build quality of this material lift, that it is estimated that approximately 60% of all Roust-A-Bouts manufactured are still in service.

Since being acquired by its current owner in 1981, Sumner Manufacturing has expanded its product range to include a full range of material lifts (2000/2100 series), equivalent to the Genie SL/SLC model range and smaller ranges of lifts specifically designed for ease of transportation.

These include the 2200 series Lil’Hoister, developed with the HVAC industry in mind, but suitable for many other lightweight lifting applications and the 2300 series Drywall Panel Lift. The Drywall Lift has a three-piece modular construction, which allows it to be easily converted from 11 to 15ft height configurations and from a drywall panel to ductwork lift.

All of its lifts are manufactured at its Houston facility and stocked locally at our UK distribution centre in Telford.
