The hoists are working on a 17m gantry extending through the metal framework of the Eiffel Tower

The hydraulic systems, press cylinders and accumulator cylinders of the west elevator are being replaced with systems that are as technically similar as possible to the original equipment. It is the first time they have been replaced in a century.

Eurobloc VT hoists are being used to remove the existing equipment and bring in the new components, using a 17m-long gantry extending through the metal framework of the tower. Radio-controlled Verlinde hoists will handle the hydraulic systems, measuring 16m-long and weighing 20t.

Plans are afoot to renovate the Eiffel Tower’s second hydraulic elevator in a similar way.
